Two suspects of having rammed a GNR vessel in the Algarve and provoking a soldier from the corporation were arrested late this Tuesday afternoon, an official source from the National Republican Guard told Lusa.
The GNR spokesperson said that the two suspects were located and identified by the Guard military on the international bridge that crosses the Guadiana River, who then handed them over to the Judiciary Police to be detained.
Carlos Canatário stated that the two suspects, Spanish nationalityare accused of drug trafficking and large amounts of money were found in the vehicle they were traveling in when they were crossing the bridge.
The GNR spokesperson admitted that there may be more suspects involved in the collision, continuing efforts to control people and movements.
A GNR soldier died and three were injured on Monday night, after the vessel they were traveling in was rammed by a high-speed boat that had been detected on the Guadiana River, in the Algarve, which the Guard suspects was related to drug trafficking.
One day later, this Tuesday, the President of the Republic issued the diploma regulating the use of speedboats to combat drug trafficking.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also regretted this outcome, expressing his regret at the death in service of the Cape Pedro Manata e Silvabelonging to the Coastal and Border Control Unit of the National Republican Guard (GNR).
