PF was warned about the operation in Rio, but refused to participate due to “disagreement”

The director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, stated this Wednesday (29) that the corporation was informed in advance about the operation carried out by the Civil and Military police of Rio de Janeiro, but decided not to participate after analyzing the planning and concluding that the action did not fit into the PF’s operational protocols.

The statement contrasts with the speech of the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, who earlier told the press that the federal government had not been informed about the operation, considered the most lethal in the country’s history, with 121 dead, including four police officers.

“There was contact at the operational level informing that there would be a major operation and whether the Federal Police would have any possibility of action. Our team in Rio analyzed the planning and understood that it was not the type of operation compatible with the way the PF operates”, said Andrei.

According to him, the corporation did not receive details about the day or the full scope of the operation, which involved more than 100 arrest warrants issued by the Rio de Janeiro justice system.

“We had no legal authority to participate and, therefore, it made no sense to take part in the action,” he stated.

During the interview, Lewandowski interrupted the PF director general to reinforce that communication about operations of this magnitude must occur between high-ranking authorities.

“An operation of this size cannot be agreed between the second or third level. If it involved the federal government, the President of the Republic, the acting vice-president, the Minister of Justice or the director general of the PF should be formally notified”, declared the minister.

The operation, considered the most lethal in the state’s history, mobilized 2,500 civil and military police officers and targeted leaders of the Red Command who operated in the Penha and Alemão complexes.
