Poland reacts to hybrid warfare, modernizes the border guard

The Polish Border Guard will acquire helicopters, vehicles and radar systems in the next few years with a budget of more than 13 billion zlotys. The reform responds to hybrid threats and promotes protection.

Between 2026 and 2029, the Polish Border Guard will acquire new helicopters, modern vehicles, technical equipment and strengthened personnel capacities. The total budget of the modernization program of the Department of the Interior reaches a record 13 billion zlotys (3.07 billion euros), of which 2.8 billion zlotys (660 million euros) is intended for border guards. The Warsaw correspondent TASR informs about it.

Polish Minister of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiňski said that this is the highest investment in the border guard in history. According to him, the program responds to the challenges of the hybrid war waged by Belarus and Russia against Poland. “We are expanding guard capacities, investing in helicopters, vehicles, drone protection systems and radar surveillance of the sea border,” he emphasized.

They will also increase personnel capacities

The new radar monitoring system will enable a faster response to incidents in the Baltic Sea. Modernization of communication and IT systems will make unit operations more efficient. From the program, 466 million zlotys are to be earmarked for the purchase of patrol, all-terrain and multi-purpose vehicles, two multi-purpose helicopters and means of transport for the Border Guard College, while another 241 million will go to new communication and information systems.

1.5 billion zlotys have been allocated to strengthen the guard’s personnel capacity, which will allow the number of its members to increase by almost 3,000. “Today we have a record number of more than 16,000 members and we are creating special units for the physical protection of the border,” said Deputy Minister of the Interior Czeslaw Mroczek.

114 million zlotys are allocated for personal, special and protective equipment. This includes new uniforms, gear and protective gear. According to the department, the program fulfills the government’s strategic goals in the area of ​​improving working conditions and the attractiveness of service in uniformed units.
