The European Union has condemned the brutality of the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Force that occupied the town of al-Fashir. She expressed concern over attacks on civilians and atrocities.
The European Union on Wednesday condemned the “brutality” of the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF), which recently occupied the strategic town of al-Fashir in the western Darfur region. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
The statement came amid reports of “mass atrocities” in the area and the killing of five Red Crescent volunteers in North Kordofan province. “Attacks on civilians on the basis of their ethnicity underline the brutality of the Rapid Support Forces,” said the statement by the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, which was joined by the European Commissioner for Equality, Hadja Lahbibová.
Statements on the protection of civilians
“Rapid support forces are responsible for the protection of civilians in the areas they administer, as well as humanitarian workers, local rescuers and journalists,” the statement said. “Humanitarian organizations must immediately be granted safe and unrestricted access to all those in need. Civilians who wish to leave the city must be allowed to do so in a safe manner,” the statement said.
Land occupation and sacrifice
The RSF occupied the city of al-Fashir in October after an 18-month siege, while they have been fighting the Sudanese army since April 2023.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies announced that five Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers were killed in the North Kordofan region of Bara on Monday. Three more people are missing after RSF forces took control of the city on Saturday.
