According to a government statement, six victims were recorded in the cities of Danang and Hoi An, which are among the country’s most visited tourist destinations. The city of Hue has also been hit hard, with around 1.7 meters of rain falling in 24 hours since Sunday evening – a new national record.

In Danang, water reservoirs have reached their maximum capacity and river levels continue to rise. “Widespread flooding continues in low-lying and urban areas, with landslides and flash floods at risk in mountainous regions of Danang,” the government said in a statement.

The floods affected more than 103,000 houses. Photos published in Vietnamese media show that much of Hoi An remains under water, with some houses flooded up to their roofs.

Several landslides in the country have disrupted traffic and damaged power lines. The state-owned railway company has not yet resumed service between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, which was suspended on Tuesday.

According to meteorologists, heavy rains in central Vietnam are expected to continue in the coming days. Another 400 millimeters of rain could fall in some areas by Thursday evening. Vietnam is regularly plagued by deadly storms and floods that cause widespread property damage, especially during the rainy season from June to October.
