The Secretary of Public Security of São Paulo and pre-candidate for the Senate in 2026, deputy Guilherme Derrite (PP), stated that life imprisonment is a topic that should be discussed in Brazil, although he positions himself against the death penalty due to his religious convictions.
During an interview with WWhe highlighted that impunity and recidivism are the main public security problems in the country.
To illustrate his position, Derrite cited the case of Suedna, known as the “sister of crime”, one of those responsible for the death of cyclist Vitor Medrado. She was sentenced to ten years and nine months in prison in 2022, but in 2024 she was in Paraisópolis involved in new crimes.
“If our country were a serious country, she would be imprisoned there until 2032. But 2 years later, in 2024, she was in Paraisópolis, being the main promoter of these robberies”, stated the secretary.
Ideological differences in public security
Derrite pointed out fundamental differences between worldviews in the area of public security. According to him, , citing recent statements about young people committing crimes.
“So, what exists today in left It’s difficult to deal with time, because their worldview has always been this, that criminals are poor people and victims of society. We defend an appropriate punishment,” said the secretary.
He also mentioned a mass decarceration proposal that had previously been advocated. For him, public security should be the least partisan issue possible, since crime affects all citizens regardless of political position.
highlighted that the criminal does not ask who the victim voted for before committing a crime, arguing that the discussion about public security needs to be guided by technical and not ideological criteria.
