Comando Vermelho leaders are transferred to maximum security prison in Rio

Ten members of the Comando Vermelho (CV) leadership were transferred from Bangu 3 to Bangu 1, a maximum security prison in Rio de Janeiro, after the mega operation carried out this Tuesday (29) in the Penha and Alemão complexes.

The action, considered the most lethal in the state’s history, left 121 people dead, including four police officers.

The change is provisional in nature and aims to isolate the leaders of the faction, identified by investigations as responsible for ordering attacks and retaliations against security forces even from inside prisons.

Federal transfers

Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) requested that the group’s leaders be sent to federal prisons in other states, as part of a strategy to weaken the faction’s hierarchical structure and hinder communication between its members.

The definitive transfer depends on authorization from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, but, according to the Rio de Janeiro government, the request was made urgently.

The offensive by the Civil and Military police aimed to dismantle the Red Command, which maintains a strong presence in the north of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The number of deaths exceeds the Carandiru massacre, which occurred in 1992, when 111 prisoners were murdered in São Paulo.
