The armed wing of Hamas announced the handover of the bodies of two Israeli prisoners. The move is part of a cease-fire agreement brokered by the United States.
The armed wing of the Palestinian movement Hamas announced that it will hand over the remains of two more Israeli hostages on Thursday. This is required by the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire agreement. TASR refers to the AFP report.
- Hamas announced the handover of the remains of two Israeli hostages.
- The cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip was brokered by the United States.
- The Israeli Prime Minister ordered attacks on Gaza for violating the ceasefire.
- The Israeli army renewed the ceasefire after Tuesday’s attack on Gaza.
- The ceasefire agreement has been in effect since October 10 after two years of conflict.
The Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades “will hand over the bodies of the two Israeli prisoners at 4:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. CET),” the group said in a statement on the Telegram social network. Militants have so far handed over the remains of 15 of the 28 dead hostages.
New attacks on Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered attacks on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday due to accusations of Hamas’s violation of the ceasefire. The strikes claimed dozens of lives, the Hamas-controlled authorities there claim. The Israeli army subsequently started to apply the cease-fire again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. local time (09:00 a.m. CET).
Netanyahu accused Hamas of violating the truce because on Monday the movement reportedly handed over some of the hostage’s remains, most of which were recovered by the Israeli army in December 2023.
The conflict after the armistice
The cease-fire agreement came into effect on October 10, ending a two-year conflict that erupted after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. The two sides have since accused each other of violating the agreement.
