The Dutch party D66, led by Rob Jetten, expects to win early elections. Exit polls indicate her leadership, which could bring about a historic change in the leadership of the country.
The leader of the Dutch party D66 (Democrats 66), Rob Jetten, declared on Wednesday that voters in the country had turned away from the “politics of negativity and hatred”. He was reacting to exit poll estimates regarding the results of early parliamentary elections in the country, according to which the social liberal D66 came first. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.
“Millions of Dutch people turned the page today. They said goodbye to the politics of negativity and hate,” said Jetten.
Preliminary results
According to exit polls, the D66 party won 27 seats in the 150-member lower house of parliament. If the vote count confirms these data, the 38-year-old leader of D66 will most likely become the youngest Dutch prime minister and the first head of government to openly declare his homosexuality.
In second place came the anti-immigration Party for Freedom (PVV), which won the regular elections in 2023 and is now expected to win 25 seats.
Its leader Geert Wilders did not hide his disappointment after the initial data on the election results. “The voters have spoken. We hoped for a different result, but we remained true to our principles,” Wilders said on Platform X.
Early parliamentary elections were triggered by the departure of the PVV from the coalition government in early June due to a dispute over migration. According to the DPA agency, the cabinet composed of four parties was characterized as the most right-wing in the history of the Netherlands. Wilders, who was not a member of the government, justified his departure from the coalition by saying that the other three partners do not support the implementation of a tough anti-immigration policy. The PVV will most likely not be in the new government, as the other major parties have ruled out a coalition with it.
The first partial results based on the tallied votes are expected during the night.
