The investigation into the fire at the refinery in Százhalombatta on October 20 is still intensively ongoing. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said this on Facebook on Thursday after hearing from Interior Minister Sándor Pintér on Wednesday. According to the prime minister, it is not yet known whether it was an accident, a malfunction or an external attack, reports the TASR correspondent in Budapest.

The oil company MOL ruled out an external attack, however Orbán recalled that the Százhalombatta refinery is one of the five most important strategic industrial plants in Hungary. He pointed out that the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski, on October 22 on the X platform, expressed the hope that the Ukrainians would succeed in blowing up the Druzhba oil pipeline.
In connection with the sharp rise in fuel prices, the Prime Minister instructed the Minister of National Economy, Márton Nagy, to negotiate with the management of MOL and make it clear to him that society cannot compensate for its lost profits at the expense of the population. However, according to the 24.hu server, experts attribute the rise in prices to the impact of American sanctions.
After the fire on October 20 at the Százhalombatta refinery 38 kilometers south of Budapest, MOL declared that in the following period, it will focus on fuel supplies in Hungary, while also considering the use of strategic stocks.
No external circumstances have been identified as the cause of the accidentMOL spokeswoman Piroska Bakosová stated at an extraordinary press conference on October 21. The executive director for processing raw materials, production of final products and development of the MOL group Krisztián Pulay said that there was no explosion in the refinery. MOL reminded that on Monday evening, a fire broke out in the AV3 plant of the Dunai Finomító oil refinery. Firefighters extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.
