The Syrian government recognized Kosovo as an independent state during a meeting in Riyadh attended by the presidents of Syria, Kosovo and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia.
On Wednesday, the Syrian government recognized Kosovo as a sovereign and independent state. This happened on Wednesday at a trilateral meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between Kosovo President Vjosa Osmaniova, Syrian President Ahmad Shar and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. Syria became the 120th country in the world to recognize Kosovo. TASR informs about it based on the report of Anadolu Agency and the Prishtina Insight portal.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the meeting in the Saudi capital was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and mutual understanding. The issue of mutual recognition and cooperation was also a topic.
Syria recognizes Kosovo
“In this regard, the Syrian Arab Republic announces its official recognition of the Republic of Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state based on its belief in the right of peoples to self-determination and its commitment to promote peace and stability in the Balkans and the world,” the Syrian ministry said in a statement.
According to Osmaniova, Syria and Kosovo are united by the fact that both nations had to overcome difficulties in the fight for their freedom. “Today’s recognition is not only a confirmation of state sovereignty, but also recognition of the sacrifice of generations who fought for freedom,” declared the President of Kosovo.
In 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia, which the government in Belgrade refuses to recognize and considers it to be part of Serbian territory. Of the EU states, Slovakia, Cyprus, Greece, Romania and Spain do not recognize the independence of Kosovo.
