The UN Security Council strongly condemned the RSF attack on the city of al-Fashir

The UN Security Council strongly condemned the attacks by the Rapid Support Force on the Sudanese city of al-Fashir, expressing concern about ethnic cleansing and the tragic impact on the civilian population.

The Security Council of the United Nations (UNSC) on Thursday condemned the attack by the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) on the city of al-Fashir, which they took control of after more than a year of siege. Suspicions arose that the RSF was committing ethnic cleansing in the city. TASR informs about this according to the report of the AFP agency and the statement of the UN Security Council published on its website.

  • The UN Security Council condemned the attack by the Sudan Rapid Support Force.
  • The RSF is allegedly carrying out ethnic cleansing in the town of al-Fashir.
  • The council members called on the RSF to immediately stop the blockade of the city.
  • The UN urges the safe access of humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians.
  • The Sudanese war has caused widespread displacement and humanitarian suffering.

“The members of the Security Council condemned the Rapid Support Force attack on al-Fashir and its devastating impact on the civilian population,” the council said in a statement. Its members recalled Resolution 2736 from 2024, which calls for the immediate lifting of the blockade of al-Fashir by the RSF, the cessation of fighting and de-escalation in and around this city.

Condemnation of violence

The UNSC condemned RSF violence against civilians, including executions and arbitrary detention. According to the UN, the parties to the conflict should allow safe and unrestricted access of humanitarian aid, protect civilians and allow safe passage for those trying to escape from the city of al-Fashir.

UNSC members reiterated that the main priority is for the parties to resume mutual negotiations with the aim of achieving a permanent ceasefire.

The extent of the military conflict

The RSF have been at war with the regular Sudanese army since April 2023. The regular army is headed by Abdal Fattáh Burhán. The paramilitary RSF is led by Burhán’s former deputy, Muhammad Hamdán Daklú. Sudan’s two-year war has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 12 million people, with the UN saying the war has sparked the world’s biggest displacement and hunger crisis. According to the BBC, the war led to famine and genocide in the Darfur region.

Burhan announced on Monday that the army had withdrawn from the besieged city of al-Fashir, where some 260,000 civilians, half of them children, were stranded without food.

RSF, according to the Sudanese network of doctors, killed 460 people in the attack on the maternity hospital on Tuesday. Satellite images from the humanitarian research center at Yale University show images of the obvious places of massacres – groups of bodies and reddish, possibly bloodstains on the ground, the BBC reports.
