Trump and Xi Jinping have exchanged letters since re-election in the USA

Chinese president said the leaders “maintain close contact” and declared it a pleasure to see the North American again

The president of China, (PCCH), said this Thursday (October 30, 2025) that he has maintained close contact with the president of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), since the North American’s re-election.

In his opening statement at the face-to-face meeting between the leaders, Xi said he has already exchanged “various letters” with Trump, in addition to having spoken on the phone on 3 occasions. Claimed to be a “pleasure” find him again.

Trump called Xi “amigo” and stated that Chinese is “a great leader of a great country”. Asked if he expected to leave the meeting with a signed agreement, Trump said he “could it be”. He called the Chinese leader “tough negotiator”.

This is the first time that Xi and Trump have met since the American began his second term as head of the White House, in January this year.

The last time the leaders met was in 2019, in Japan. The meeting between Xi and Trump is held in Busan (South Korea).

This is also the first meeting between the heads of the 2 countries since the escalation of the trade war in April. The conflict started by the USA caused an exchange of trade barriers between the 2 countries.

Tensions in the trade war escalated again with the announcement of 100% taxation against Chinese products announced by Trump at the beginning of the month. According to the North American leader, this was a retaliation for Chinese control over rare earth exports and the suspension of purchases of North American soybeans.
