TSE schedules trial that could lead to the revocation and ineligibility of Cláudio Castro

The governor of Rio and the president of Alerj, Rodrigo Bacellar, are accused of irregularities in the hiring of employees to act as electoral canvassers

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) scheduled for next Tuesday (4) the analysis of two actions that could lead to the impeachment and ineligibility of the governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro (PL), and the president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), Rodrigo Bacellar (União Brasil). The two are accused of irregularities in the hiring of Ceperj employees to act as canvassers and have always denied the accusations.

The case reached the TSE after the Electoral MP appealed the decision of the Rio de Janeiro Regional Electoral Court (TRE-RJ) that acquitted the duo. The case is reported by Minister Isabel Gallotti, who released the case for judgment in the final stretch of her mandate at the Electoral Court, which runs until November 21st.

For the Electoral Attorney General’s Office, Cláudio Castro committed abuse of political and economic power and should be impeached. If he leaves the role, the president of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (TJ-RJ), Ricardo Couto de Castro, would take his place.

The judge will already have to take up the role in April if Cláudio Castro leaves the role to apply for another position. The governor can no longer run for re-election. Bacellar, in turn, intends to run for state government.

Castro has been involved in recent days in the controversy over the Rio de Janeiro police operation against members of the Red Command, which became the most lethal in history. As of Wednesday night, the State had confirmed 121 deaths. The Public Defender’s Office speaks of 132.
