China declares an unstoppable historical trend towards reunification with Taiwan

China’s defense minister described reunification with Taiwan as an unstoppable historical trend. The United States is cautious and warns against unilateral actions.

Chinese Defense Minister Tung Jun said on Friday that the “reunification” of China and Taiwan is an “unstoppable historical trend”. He said this during a meeting with his American ministry counterpart Pete Hegseth in Malaysia. TASR writes about it according to the DPA and Reuters agencies.

  • The Chinese Minister of Defense called the unification with Taiwan irreversible.
  • He asked the US to support the one China policy.
  • The ministers met after the talks between Presidents Trump and Si.
  • Taiwan rejects the principle of one country, two systems.
  • China continues to be active around Taiwan and the South China Sea.

According to Tung, China has sufficient capacity to respond to provocations. According to him, the United States should carefully consider its words and actions regarding Taiwan and reject the island’s independence.

The defense ministers’ talks took place a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping met with US President Donald Trump in South Korea. The head of the White House later reported that he had not discussed Taiwan with Sim.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory. In 1949, after the defeat in the civil war, the former Chinese government, the Kuomintang, under the leadership of General Chiang Kai-shek, took refuge on the island and has had an independent government ever since. Communist China regards the government in Taiwan as separatists and repeatedly declares that a democratic Taiwan will one day rule.

Since the 1970s, Washington has been promoting the so-called the one-China policy and officially maintains diplomatic relations only with the government in Beijing. However, it remains an ally of Taiwan, to which it supplies weapons.

At the meeting with Tung, Hegseth expressed “serious” concerns about China’s activities in the South China Sea, around Taiwan and toward US allies and partners. According to him, the United States does not want a conflict, but it will protect its interests in the Indo-Pacific “definitely”.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Friday rejected aggression by Communist Beijing and any efforts to reunify China, including autonomy along the lines of the Chinese cities of Hong Kong and Macau.

“We reject the principle of one country, two systems, because we will always take care of our free and democratic constitutional system,” explained Laj.
