Since ancient times, even during the pagan Dziady period, it was believed that on the night from October 31 to November 1, the world of the living and the dead intertwined. Many rituals have been preserved in the Christian tradition, giving All Saints’ Day an exceptionally mysterious character.
Along with the rituals, certain superstitions have survived to this day, which are a reminder not only of the dead, but also of being careful with what is invisible. This time we present a superstition related to… food. This simple ritual can guarantee good luck for the coming year.
The graves were visited by crowds in November even in pagan times. The Slavs believed that the souls of their ancestors returned to earth and visited their former homes to warm themselves and eat. Therefore, lights were turned on in the apartments and food was left for beggars called Dziady. They were identified with the dead.
Performing these two simple rituals was supposed to ensure prosperity in the coming year. It was believed that well-hosted spirits would protect the house from bad energy.
In both pagan and Christian traditions, All Souls’ Day was identified with light, which was a symbol of hope and the victory of good over evil. In the past, bonfires were lit in front of the house, and later candles were placed on graves.
In the Christian tradition, additional prayers were said for the souls of loved ones. They were supposed to help you find peace and achieve salvation. It was also believed that remembering the dead and praying for them brings the living protection against misfortune and blessing for the entire coming year.
An ancient and simple ritual on November 1 is to leave food in front of the house “for the dead”. This custom was cultivated in Polish villages – it was believed that it would provide peace to souls. If the plates are left empty, the household will be protected from evil spells.
It is worth performing this simple ritual now. Just put some food out in front of your house. Animals can always be tempted by them, which will also be a good sign. We will certainly be rewarded by fate – happiness and prosperity will remain with us throughout 2026.
