With authorization from the Minister of Justice, the Federal Police are conducting an investigation to investigate the conduct of the Pernambuco lawyer Thomas Crisóstomo, who made posts criticizing and ironizing the president and the first lady, as well as the minister, of the Federal Supreme Court. The action is being processed in the Federal Court in Recife.
In a document sent to the general director of the PF, Andrei Rodrigues, the minister requests that it be investigated whether Crisóstomo’s posts, from 2023, constitute a crime against honor.
Among the demonstrations made on social media, the lawyer called for Moraes’ impeachment and said that EBC (Empresa Brasil de Comunicação), linked to the federal government, had become a job site “for the ex-convict’s wife”, in reference to the first lady.
To the Panel, the lawyer said it was “absurd to see the State mobilizing time and public resources to investigate tweets with little scope and no real offense.” “I didn’t commit any crime, I just exercised my right to criticize,” he adds.
When contacted by the Panel, he said he could not speak because the police investigations were carried out in secret.
At the end of the investigation conducted by the PF, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office concluded that Crisóstomo committed a crime of insult against Lula, claiming that the lawyer only wanted to offend the president’s decorum by calling him an “ex-convict” and offered the possibility of beginning negotiations on a non-criminal prosecution agreement.
“Freedom of expression cannot be used as a safe conduct to authorize the publication of messages with a clear vexatious nature and damaging to the image of third parties”, wrote the attorney for the Republic Polireda Madaly Bezerra de Medeiros, in her order on the 13th.
Crisóstomo, however, says he will reject any agreement and must file an appeal with the Federal Court in Recife.
