Theft occurred in the early morning hours of October 15th at the Oakland Museum’s outdoor warehouse.
A historical museum in Northern California suffered a mass theft of more than a thousand objects in mid-October, an incident that is being investigated by authorities and the US Federal Police (FBI).
The robbery occurred in the early morning hours of October 15 at the outdoor warehouse of the Oakland Museum in California, the Oakland Police Department said in a statement this week.
“The suspect(s) broke into the premises and stole more than a thousand items from the museum’s collection, including indigenous baskets, jewelry, laptops and other historical artifacts,” the statement read.
The estimated value of the pieces, as well as the method used by the thieves to access the location, is still unknown.
“This act represents a brazen action that deprives the public of our state’s cultural heritage,” highlighted the museum’s executive director, Lori Fogarty.

Most of the stolen objects had been donated to the museum by benefactors.
The Oakland Museum of California, founded in 1969 and located in the heart of Oakland, focuses its collection on the state’s art, history and science, featuring artifacts and interactive exhibits.
