The prime minister’s big promise: The government has decided to introduce the 14th pension

After a long discussion, the Hungarian government decided to introduce the 14th pension. The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, announced this on Facebook on Thursday evening, according to which he is currently working on the way to implement this plan. The correspondent of TASR in Budapest informs about it.

The head of the government office, Gergely Gulyás, said at a Thursday morning press conference that “they are investigating the possibility of squeezing the 14th monthly pension into the budget framework”. He added that the cabinet would like to introduce the 14th pension, but no relevant government decision has been taken yet.

In a post on the social network on Wednesday, Orbán said that as long as he is in power, the elderly will be safe. He was reacting to the statements of the non-parliamentary opposition party TISZA, which claims that it is necessary to reform the unsustainable pension system. “We not only protect pensions, we also continuously increase them,” Orbán wrote on his Facebook account on Tuesday evening.

“The left canceled the 13th pension, we returned it. Now, if they (TISZA) come to power, they are going to cut pensions brutally – but we will not allow it! As long as I’m here, the elderly can feel safe!” underlined Orbán. Over the past 15 years, the average pension in Hungary has increased from around 100,000 forints (257 euros) a month to almost 250,000 (644 euros), Gulyás said in February.
