The investigation into the theft of jewels from the Louvre has resulted in the indictment of additional suspects. The Paris Prosecutor’s Office reports on fundamental findings in the case of stolen historical valuables.
Two other suspects, a 37-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, have been charged in connection with the burglary and theft of jewelry from the Louvre Museum in Paris. Three days after they were detained as part of an extensive investigation, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced this on Saturday, TASR reports, according to the AP and AFP agencies.
According to the announcement, the accused man is suspected of theft committed by an organized group and criminal association. The woman is charged with complicity. On Saturday, the judge decided to keep them in custody. Both deny the charges, prosecutor Laure Beccuau added.
More charges
On Wednesday, the police arrested five people during the investigation of the case, one of whom they linked to the theft of DNA. The court released the remaining three detainees without charges.
This week, two other previously arrested suspects, men aged 34 and 39 from the town of Aubervilliers, north of Paris, were charged with involvement in the Louvre burglary. According to Beccuau, both “partially confessed”. They are believed to be the men who broke into the Apollo Gallery, where they stole the jewels, while two other accomplices waited outside the museum.
The value of the stolen jewelry
Thieves stole nine precious jewels from the Apollo Gallery of the Louvre on Sunday, October 19. They managed to escape with eight. The damaged crown of Empress Eugenia was found near the museum. The value of the looted valuables is estimated at 88 million euros, but given their historical significance, experts consider it incalculable.
