The US president, , confirmed today that his country will resume , but did not directly answer when asked if this would include the “traditional” underground tests that were common during the Cold War.
“You’ll find out very soon, we’re going to do some tests,” he told reporters accompanying him aboard the presidential jet taking him to Palm Beach, Florida. “Other countries do it. As long as they do it, so will we,” he said.
On Thursday, for the first time after 33 years. This move appears to be a “message” to rival nuclear powers China and Russia.
It is not clear at this time whether Trump was referring to explosive tests of nuclear weapons or tests of missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. No other nuclear power, excluding North Korea, has tested nuclear weapons in 25 years. North Korea’s last test dates back to 2017.
