Autumn days test our psyche: Depression threatens! Important advice from experts

The autumn period is a test for the psyche, it brings with it an increase in feelings of sadness, loneliness or psychological anxiety. In situations where these symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to seek professional help. A timely reaction can prevent the development of depression. This was pointed out by Miriam Kvostková, the head of the long-term sick department of the hospital in Handlova.

  • The autumn season can cause sadness, anxiety and a feeling of loneliness.
  • Risk groups are the elderly, lonely people and the chronically ill.
  • Depression can also affect the health of patients with chronic diseases.
  • Meetings with loved ones and activities can alleviate depressive symptoms.
  • Depression is a widespread disease of civilization, affecting 4% of the population.

Feelings of sadness, loneliness or psychological anxiety affect the elderly, lonely people and people with chronic diseases the most. “The autumn period is demanding by its nature, the days are getting shorter, the sunny moments are decreasing, the rainy days are increasing. Older patients perceive these changes more intensively, they often focus much more on the pain, they perceive its intensification even in situations where objectively there was no need for worsening.” explained the doctor.

According to her, experts monitor the mood changes that are typical for autumn, but at the same time recommend being careful that they do not lead to a more serious diagnosis, namely depression. “Depression can also be manifested by the worsening of chronic diseases – digestive problems in patients with stomach ulcers, impaired breathing in respiratory diseases or problems in cardiovascular diseases,” named the doctor, saying that loneliness has a negative effect on overall health. “After all, man is a social creature,” she pointed out.

If depressive symptoms remain in the early phase, seniors can try to follow the basic principles already in the home environment. “Meetings with family or acquaintances, joint conversations, walks are favorable. Even a small stimulus can change the mood. However, the environment does not always have the time or capacity, then feelings of isolation grow and the risk of depression multiplies.” the primary care physician approached and pointed out that in more difficult cases it is necessary to proceed with treatment.

“Depression is one of the most widespread diseases of civilization today. It affects approximately four percent of the population. If we neglect it, it complicates the treatment of other diseases and can lead to more serious consequences. Therefore, it is necessary to draw attention to it in time and solve it simultaneously with other health problems.” concluded Kvostková.
