Iran says it will rebuild ‘with greater capacity’ its nuclear facilities destroyed by US and Israeli bombings

The government stated this Sunday (2) that it will rebuild “with greater capacity” its nuclear installations destroyed by the bombings of and in the 12-day war in June, but again assured that it does not seek to obtain atomic weapons. “Science resides in the minds of our scientists and there will be no problem with the destruction of buildings and factories. We will rebuild with greater capacity,” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a meeting with executives from the country’s nuclear industry, the news agency reported. IRNA.

Pezeshkian reiterated that Tehran does not seek to manufacture atomic bombs, based on the fatwa (religious decree) of the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who in 2003 declared nuclear weapons “haram” (forbidden). Since then, Iran has ensured that its nuclear program is for exclusively civilian purposes. “Our nuclear activities are aimed at solving the people’s problems and civil issues,” the Iranian president emphasized, rejecting accusations from Western countries and Israel that Iran seeks to obtain an atomic bomb.

On Saturday (1st), Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said in an interview with the Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera that his country is willing to negotiate to end concerns about the nature of its nuclear program, although it has refused to enter into direct talks with the United States.

Araghchi considered unacceptable the conditions imposed by the US to reach an agreement, which include zero enrichment of uranium in Iran and limiting the Islamic country’s missile program. “We will never negotiate our missile program and no rational actor would accept disarming”, stated the head of Iranian diplomacy, who assured that “what was not achieved through war cannot be achieved through politics”.

On June 13, Israel launched an offensive against military, nuclear and civilian targets in Iran, which caused more than a thousand deaths, to which Tehran responded by firing missiles and drones into Israeli territory, causing around 30 deaths.

On June 22, the US also intervened in the war with bombings against three nuclear facilities in Iran, where, according to Araghchi, more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% were buried, very close to the 90% needed to manufacture nuclear weapons. Since this 12-day conflict, the nuclear negotiations that Iran and the USA began in April indirectly and with Oman’s mediation have stalled.
