The Turkish president said that the country is “held hostage to an imperialist game” in the eastern Mediterranean and reiterated Ankara’s position in favor of a two-state solution for the Cyprus conflict.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Permanent Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC) in Istanbul, Erdogan argued that “Cyprus is also added to the menu of the imperialist game being played in our region.”
“I consider it important for our Organization to further strengthen its solidarity with the Turkish Cypriot people. I expect you to offer even greater support to the struggle of Turkish Cypriots for rights, freedom and justice, on the basis of the two-state solution,” he added, expressing a position that contradicts the UN resolutions, which provide for the reunification of Cyprus in the framework of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation.
“We, as a motherland and guarantor force, will never abandon the Turkish Cypriot people and will always stand by their side in their just struggle,” the Turkish president stressed.
