The strongest drought in recent decades. Tehran’s main source of drinking water has a two-week supply

The Iranian metropolis, Tehran, is suffering from a historic drought. Karadžská dam has water reserves for two weeks, while the situation seriously threatens the drinking regime of millions of inhabitants.

The main source of drinking water for the Iranian capital, Tehran, is at risk of drying up within two weeks as a result of Iran’s worst drought in history. This was reported by the Iranian state media on Sunday, writes TASR, according to the report of the AFP agency.

According to the director of the water company, the Karaj dam, one of five that supplies the Iranian capital with drinking water, “holds only 14 million cubic meters of water, which is eight percent of its capacity.” It will be enough for Tehran for about two weeks.

Tehran is suffering from drought

More than 10 million people live in the Iranian metropolis. Despite the relatively extensive river system that feeds the dams around Tehran, the country is plagued by the worst droughts in decades. They cause an acute shortage of drinking water. Just a year ago, the Karadz dam held approximately 86 million cubic meters of water.

The head of the water company did not say how much water is in other dams near Tehran. According to Iranian media, the local population consumes approximately three million cubic meters of water per day.

Water conservation measures

As part of measures to conserve drinking water, its supplies to some Tehran neighborhoods have been interrupted in recent days. Outages were also frequent during this summer – in July and August, the government announced special days off, which limited the activities of offices, schools and companies, and during extreme heat, the consumption of electricity and water also decreased.

“The crisis in the field of water management is more serious than it is being discussed today,” said Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkiyan some time ago.
