Names like Gael, Ravi and Valentina had dizzying growth from 2010 onwards

Brazil is a country made up mainly of Marias, Josés, Silvas and Santos. Out of every hundred Brazilians, six are Marias. They total 12.3 million people. In the Ceará cities of Morrinhos and Bela Cruz, Marias make up 22% of the population. The Silvas are 34 million Brazilians or 16% of the population. In six cities in Pernambuco and Alagoas, the Silvas make up more than 60% of the population. The revelations are part of the Nomes do Brasil website, released this Tuesday (4) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (). The interactive tool allows you to consult the occurrence, period of birth, geographic concentration and median age of people with certain names and surnames. The survey portrays the Brazilian population on August 1, 2022, the base date of the 2022 Census.

The period in which the name occurred allows us to identify, for example, that Marias’ birth peak was from 1960 to 1969, with 2.5 million. Between 2020 and 2022, the number was 517 thousand. Names like Gael, Ravi and Valentina saw dizzying growth from 2010 onwards. If in the first decade of the 21st century 763 people were born named Gael, between 2020 and 2022 there were 96.5 thousand. In total, IBGE identified more than 140 thousand names and 200 thousand surnames. There is no differentiation between graphic signs, that is, there is no differentiation between Tamara and Tâmara. In cases such as Ana and Anna, Luís and Luiz, the names are counted separately.
