Minister would explain granting protection to the former first lady of Peru sentenced to 15 years for money laundering
The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, sent a letter to the Chamber’s Committee on Foreign Relations and National Defense, signed by the national secretary of Legislative Affairs, Marivaldo de Castro Pereira, informing him of the cancellation of his participation in the meeting scheduled for this Tuesday (4.Nov.2025).
The minister would provide clarification on the concession of , Nadine Heredia.
No document ( – 69 kB)sent based on art. 50 of the Federal Constitution and in art. 219 of the Chamber’s Internal Regulations, the ministry stated that the minister regrets not being able to attend “due to the short deadline and commitments previously assumed”.
The text recalls that, a week before the summons request was approved, Lewandowski had already appeared before the Public Security and Combating Organized Crime Commission, on April 29, when he was questioned about the same topic.
At the time, according to the record reproduced in the letter, the minister explained that the asylum was granted for humanitarian and state reasons, according to information from Chancellor Mauro Vieira, citing Heredia’s health status and family situation following the arrest of former president Ollanta Humala.
Brazil granted asylum based on the Caracas Convention on Diplomatic Asylum (1954), an international treaty signed by both countries. The decision was announced on April 15, after Heredia and Humala were sentenced to 15 years in prison for money laundering.
The letter also states that the Brazilian government formally communicated the decision to Peru, respecting diplomatic channels and highlighting that Brazil maintains a “historical tradition in granting diplomatic asylum” and recognizes “the importance of the institute for the protection of persecuted people”.
