European ministers tried to reach an agreement before the COP30 climate summit, which starts next Monday in Brazil. As stated by the Danish Minister for Climate Lars Aagaard, who presided over the negotiationsthe ministers in a public vote approved the goal of a 90 percent reduction in emissions and at the same time approved that member states will be able to purchase emission credits abroad up to five percentage points of the aforementioned goal.
In practice, this means that European industry will only have to achieve an 85 percent reduction in emissions, explained Reuters. EU member states can also take into account emission reductions achieved in other countries of the world. In order to convince its hesitant members, the EU also agreed to assess the possibility of trading carbon credits within the Union in the future.
