(FOLHAPRESS) – The President of the United States, Donald Trump, attacked Jewish voters who support the socialist and Muslim candidate Zohran Mamdani, favorite to win the mayorship of the country’s largest city in the elections taking place this Tuesday (4), calling them stupid in a post on a social network.
“Any Jew who votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self-proclaimed ENEMY OF THE JEWS, is a stupid person!!!”, wrote the Republican, with the usual capital letters, on the Truth Social network.
Mamdani has been the target of attacks due to his criticism of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip. The Democrat has already said that the military campaign constitutes genocide and stated that he would not travel to Israeli territory as soon as he was elected, unlike other candidates. He never claimed, however, to be an enemy of the Jews, as Trump wrote.
Before that, he created a Palestine defense group at the university, a banner that also led to the campaign for mayor. The controversy surrounding his criticism of Israel reached beyond New York and sparked debate among Jews in the country, raising questions about the role of the Jewish community in American politics.
Trump, in turn, increased criticism of Mamdani after the election gained prominence. If the results of the polls are confirmed, the Democrat will be the first Muslim mayor and the youngest to govern New York since 1892. More than that, his victory would highlight the most left wing of the Democratic Party, as the candidate defines himself as a socialist and presents progressive proposals.
Ahead of two other candidates in the latest polls, Mamdani defeated the more moderate wing of the Democratic Party by defending clearly left-wing agendas. This split caused an unprecedented division in the New York election, with two Democratic candidates competing for the same seat.
The primaries took place in July, when Mamdani beat Andrew Cuomo, former governor of New York. Even though he was defeated, Cuomo launched himself as an independent candidate, trying to use his experience as an asset – although it is precisely his political past that hurts him.
The third candidate is Republican Curtis Sliwa, who appears in third place. According to a survey by Emerson College, Mamdani leads by 25 points.
Born in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, Mamdani moved to New York at the age of seven with his parents, of Indian origin. The son of a Columbia University professor and a film director, he became an American citizen in 2018.
It presents four central proposals: free buses throughout the city; a network of public supermarkets managed by the city hall, to reduce prices; freezing rents to combat the high cost of housing; and expanding the supply of affordable housing. Additionally, he plans to increase taxes on those earning more than $1 million a year.
