Poland plans to import liquefied natural gas from the USA for Slovakia and Ukraine

Poland is negotiating to import LNG from the United States. This step would enable the supply of gas to Slovakia and Ukraine and fundamentally affect Europe’s energy independence.

Poland is negotiating an agreement on the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States so that it can subsequently supply Slovakia and Ukraine with it. This was stated by two sources familiar with the negotiations for the Reuters agency, writes TASR.

According to one of the sources, the officials will release a joint statement on the increase in imports after meeting at the transatlantic energy conference in Athens later this week. “After that, negotiations would follow on the terms of deliveries to Slovakia,” said one of the sources.

Volume of gas supplies

“Potential volumes transported south through Poland could amount to 4 to 5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which is approximately the annual gas consumption of Slovakia,” the sources said.

“We didn’t take full advantage of the historic opportunity to free Europe from Russian energy and (force) them to switch to American energy, but now this (presidential) administration is going all out and making a real shift. We could be witnessing a seismic shift in the way Europe gets its energy,” the anonymous US official said. The Polish Ministry of Energy refused to answer Reuters’ questions.

EU plans

Last month, the European Union presented new plans to end the purchase of Russian oil and gas together with another package of sanctions, which also includes a ban on the import of Russian LNG until 2027. Slovakia and Hungary continue to buy energy raw materials from Russia, which earned them criticism even from US President Donald Trump.

The United States currently supplies Europe with approximately 55 percent of LNG, up from 27 percent in 2021. According to Reuters calculations, a complete replacement of Russian LNG with American LNG would increase the US market share to more than 80 percent.
