Russia maintains continuous contact with Venezuela over ongoing tensions in the Caribbean, where the United States is conducting operations against alleged drug traffickers from the South American countryKremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

“We are in constant communication with Venezuela,” answered Peskov, according to the TASS agency, when asked by journalists whether Moscow would extend its aid to Caracas. TASS reported that Peskov refused to provide further information about the contact with Venezuela.

On Sunday, Moscow called on Washington and Caracas to avoid a new conflict in the region after attacks by US forces on alleged drug smugglers from Venezuela. US military operations in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific have already claimed 61 lives. Over the weekend, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned “disproportionate military violence” by the US and reaffirmed its support for Venezuelan leaders. Russia and Venezuela signed a partnership agreement in May, which entered into force in October, but according to available information, it does not include military support, DPA writes.

Washington does not recognize Maduro’s election to the presidency. He has offered a $50 million reward for information leading to his capture as the Venezuelan leader faces drug-trafficking charges. For weeks, US forces have been attacking ships allegedly smuggling drugs in the Caribbean and Pacific, with Caracas saying the US is complicit.. Venezuela and other countries perceive this as a threat of potential military intervention, DPA added.
