Second supermoon of the year can be seen in Brazil for 3 days

A second supermoon of 2025 will be this Wednesday (5) and can be seen throughout Brazil and abroad. The phenomenon occurs when the full moon is less than 360,000 kilometers from Earth, appearing larger and brighter than normal. The Castor supermoon, the biggest and brightest this year, will remain visible for three consecutive days.

The phenomenon can be observed with the naked eye throughout Brazil, as long as the weather conditions are favorable. It can be observed without special equipment.

This happens when the full moon coincides with perigee, the point in its orbit at which it is closest to the earth. The result is a satellite that is about 14% larger and up to 30% brighter than normal.

Although the term supermoon is not officially used by astronomers, it has become popular for simply translating this visual effect that draws attention with each occurrence.

Schedules

The best time to enjoy the show will be just after sunset. In São Paulo, moonrise should occur around 6:45 pm; in Belém, at 6:14 pm; and in Recife, at 5:28 pm — approximate times, which vary depending on the region and local time zone.

To enjoy the moment, just look for a place with good visibility of the horizon and hope for a clear sky. In this condition, it will be possible to observe the moon with the naked eye, closer, brighter and more detailed.

According to the astronomer of National ObservatoryJosina Nascimento, the term supermoon is recognized “only when it occurs during the full phase, but whenever the moon orbits the Earth, completing its cycle of phases, at some point it will be at perigee”.

A month later, on December 4, the third and final supermoon of 2025 will appear.
