Democrats won the governorships of Virginia and New Jersey, as well as the mayor of New York

The President of the United States, (Republican Party), attributed his party’s unfavorable performance on Tuesday (4.Nov.2025) to the fact that he himself did not appear as a candidate, in addition to the partial shutdown of the federal government caused by the budget impasse between the White House and Congress.

Democrats won 3 races considered strategic. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger beat Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, while Mikie Sherrill beat Jack Ciattarelli. In New York, Zohran Mamdani is running for mayor of the city.

On the Truth Social social network, the president wrote: “Trump not being on the ballot and the government freeze were the 2 reasons Republicans lost the election tonight”. According to him, this would be the assessment “dictated by research institutes”without specifying which ones.

On Tuesday (28.Oct.2025) by Reuters/Ipsos, Trump’s approval dropped to 40%, returning to the lowest level of his term. The survey indicates a deterioration in public perception regarding the government’s conduct during the period of administrative shutdown.

Trump advocated changes to the electoral system, including the end of voting by mail. In another on the social network, he declared that “the Senate must end the filibuster”a rule that requires 60 votes to end the debate and allow voting on projects. According to him, eliminating this requirement would allow the government to approve proposals with a simple majority. The president did not detail which measures would be prioritized if the change went ahead.

There is no forecast for the end of the shutdownwhich reduces the functioning of federal agencies, temporarily suspends public services and may delay payments for employees considered non-essential. The prolonged duration puts pressure on political negotiations and may increase the administrative cost of resumption.

Although Republicans hold a majority in both houses of Congress, Democrats block spending proposals in the Senate and condition an agreement on the extension of health insurance subsidies that expire at the end of the year.
