In his victory speech, Mamdani told his supporters that they had toppled a political dynasty and given a voice to the often ignored and marginalized cooks, delivery men and taxi drivers in one of the world’s most expensive cities.

“Over the past 12 months, you have dared to aim for something greater. Tonight, against all odds, we have achieved it. The future is in our hands.”he stated, quoted by the newspaper.

The Democrat will take office in January 2026. With Mamdani elected, the president (Republican Party) must move forward with the proposal for the National Guard to intervene in the city’s public security, as he does with .

Mamdani becomes the youngest mayor in more than a century to lead New York. The politician emerged as the favorite for mayor after winning the Democratic Party primaries on June 24 – the party has governed the North American metropolis since 2014.

His government proposals include universal daycare, free public buses, freezing rent in subsidized units and taxing millionaires.
