Minister Alexandre de Moraes presides for the first time, this Thursday, at a session of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Moraes is the current vice-president of the Court and will lead a trial during the absence of the president, Edson Fachin, who is participating in a preparatory event for COP 30, the climate conference in Belém.
Fachin and Moraes took up their posts at the end of September, for a two-year term. According to the tradition of the STF, which follows the order of seniority, Moraes will be the next president of the Court, starting in 2027.
The announcement about the presidency of the session was made by Fachin on Wednesday. Minister Dias Toffoli joked that his colleague would be “eager” to take on the position, and he reinforced:

“If I want, I can also preside over these last 10 minutes,” declared Moraes, laughing.
Fachin will participate in the Climate Summit, alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the presidents of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), and the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP). The event precedes COP 30, which starts next week.
Moraes has been at the STF since 2017, as appointed by President Michel Temer (MDB). In recent years, he gained prominence for being the rapporteur of a series of investigations against former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and allies, including the criminal case in which Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for an attempted coup d’état.
The first item on Thursday’s agenda is a process that discusses whether public lawyers need to be registered with the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB). An action regarding the payment of legal fees for succumbing to State attorneys may also be heard.
