The president of Turismo do Algarve (RTA) classified this Wednesday the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix “as an important asset”, which has a direct impact of 80 million euros (ME) on the regional economy.
According to André Gomes, the penultimate stage of the World Speed Motorcycling Championship, on the weekend, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (), in Portimão, “in addition to its economic importance, reinforces the region’s position in hosting events of global scale”.
For him, the economic impact should be in line with last year’s, “standing in the order of 80 million euros, but with multiplier effects on the entire regional economy”.
André Gomes considers that the seventh consecutive edition of the race in Portimão “has a special symbolism” as it marks the farewell of Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira from the MotoGP category, and could attract “more public”.
This year, around 170 thousand people are expected, a number that André Gomes believes could “be higher” as it marks the farewell of the pilot born in Almada.
For the president of the RTA, the renewal of the contract to hold the ‘queen’ race of speed motorcycling until 2026 in Portimão, “translates trust between the public and private entities involved and guarantees stability to an event that projects the Algarve and Portugal in more than 200 countries”.
“The event reinforces the international notoriety of the Algarve brand and affirms tourism as an active driver of the national economy throughout the year”, concludes the head of Algarve Tourism.
