COP30: see which countries signaled Lula’s contributions to the TFFF

Belém – The government mapped more than 20 countries that signaled contributions to the Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF), as part of the president’s offensive on bilateral agendas before the Climate Summit. The event brings together heads of state in Pará starting this Thursday (6/11) and precedes the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change ().

To the Metropolisesgovernment sources consider that these countries are on track to make contributions, and state that the list tends to grow with the start of the Summit. They are:

On Wednesday night (5/11), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, spoke about Lula’s agenda and hid the game about the contributions. When asked if there had been any progress, the chancellor limited himself to saying that “we will have meetings for that tomorrow”. is being prepared by the government for countries that put money into the initiative.

The Leaders’ Summit brings together senior government representatives to set the pace and limits of countries’ actions during the COP, which has broader and more deliberative participation. In this sense, Lula dedicated himself to a series of bilateral agendas before the event, to convince peers to put money into the fund.

One of Brazil’s main objectives is to implement financing mechanisms, specifically the Tropical Forest Fund (for its acronym in English). According to the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, a target for this specific program was set to raise US$10 billion by the end of next year.

To date, however, only US$2 billion has been contributed, US$1 billion from Brazil and another US$1 billion from Indonesia. The objective is to raise US$25 billion through governments, and another US$75 billion from the private sector. At COP, demand has grown for companies to participate in the climate renewal process.

Lula should continue to raise the issue in bilateral meetings. This Thursday, the PT member meets the president of , Emmanuel Macron. The country, which on the one hand hinders Mercosur in negotiating the agreement with the European Union, has demonstrated itself to be an ally of the PT’s positions on environmental protection.

Paths to financing

The preview of the COP30 directives suggests taxing the super-rich, planes and luxury fashion to achieve the climate finance target. The calling roadmap presents a series of paths to reach US$1.3 trillion in external contributions by 2035.

The value was established at COP29, in Azerbaijan, and aims to allow developing countries to receive payment for nature maintenance work.
