O Cancer is the main cause of death in 670 cities in Brazil, according to a study by the Oncology Observatory presented on Wednesday (5) during the Big Data Forum in Oncology, in Rio de Janeiro.
The data was recorded based on 26 years of records from the Ministry of Health. The survey shows that cancer has surpassed as the main cause of death in 12% of Brazilian cities.
According to the study, deaths from tumors increased 120% from 1998 to 2023, the period in which deaths were recorded. The survey used people’s place of residence to indicate the results.
In a previous study, in 2015, the number of cities in which cancer was the main cause of death was 516 municipalities, corresponding to 10% of Brazilian municipalities.
This corresponds to an average of 17 more municipalities each year between 2015 and 2023and an increase of 30% between these two years.
The data update information from a first study of 2016, published in the first edition of the Big Data Forum.
The Observatory also carried out a study predicting that 2029 could be the year in which it will become the first cause of death in Brazil.
According to the mortality projection carried out using Tableau software, the mortality rate from Neoplasms will exceed the mortality rate from Circulatory System Diseases between the years 2028 and 2029.
In 2028, 117 people per 100,000 inhabitants will die from cardiovascular disease and another 114 people per 100,000 inhabitants will die from cancer. By 2029, 113 people per 100,000 inhabitants will die from cardiovascular disease, while 115 people per 100,000 inhabitants will die from cancer.
According to the estimate, therefore, If there are no effective measures to prevent and control cancer, from the year 2029 onwards there will be more Brazilians, including men, women and children, who will die from some type of cancer than from some type of cardiovascular disease.
