Sigmar Gabriel called the underestimation of Putin one of the biggest mistakes of German politics. The investigation is to clarify the connection of the foundation with the Nord Stream 2 project.
A former member of the German government, Sigmar Gabriel, called the incorrect assessment of Russian President Putin’s intentions “one of the biggest mistakes of German foreign policy”. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

The former minister of the economy and later of foreign affairs Gabriel testified before the commission, which deals with the possible influence of Russia on the Foundation for the Protection of the Climate and the Environment of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Although the ex-minister denied cooperation between the government and the foundation, he admitted that mistakes were made in relation to Russia during his tenure.
Mistakes in foreign policy
Misjudging Putin and his intentions is, according to Gabriel, “one of the biggest mistakes of German foreign policy.” He described it as a “bitter realization”.
An investigation by the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is to clarify whether Russia influenced the foundation that helped complete the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in 2021.
