Michelle Obama61, revealed that she avoided talking about fashion during her time as First Lady of the United States because she feared the subject would become a distraction.
The American recently released a new book, entitled “The Look”, in which she reflects on her personal style and the role of fashion in her public life.
During a People Inc. event in New York, she revealed: “I don’t know if you noticed, but in the eight years I was in the White House, I didn’t say anything about fashion. It was you who did.”
The former lawyer explained that she wanted the American public to know her in a deeper way, beyond her clothes and public appearances: “I wanted the country to know me on a more substantial level. I wanted to be able to tell my whole story before talking about the shoes and the dresses. I wanted my initiatives to speak for me and show who I was.”
he added that, although he is aware of the impact of fashion on his career, he preferred to wait for the right moment to address the topic: “Now, after two books, a podcast and time away from a defined position, I feel that the world already knows me for who I really am.”
In “The Look,” she explores how fashion became part of her diplomatic mission between 2009 and 2017, when she represented the United States alongside her husband, .
“This book is more than fashion and style. It’s about the journey, the behind-the-scenes of what it meant to dress every day to represent a nation in front of the world,” he said.
“It is also a tribute to the designers who worked tirelessly on my behalf, without seeking recognition, and to my team, people who have become like family to me,” he concluded.
