The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, announced a contribution of €1 million to the Tropical Forests forever Fund (TFFF). The announcement was made at the Leaders’ Summit, which precedes the UN Climate Conference (COP30). “Portugal will remain as a founding country”. Montenegro said.

To date, only Brazil had contributed US$1 billion to the fund. Indonesia announced that it will make a contribution, but has not yet detailed the amounts.

This Thursday, the 6th, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will host a lunch for heads of state to ask countries to endorse the fund.

In recent days, diplomats began to fear that the fund would receive low contributions, exactly like Portugal’s, just so that the countries could promote themselves as investors and be in the photo and speak at the TFFF lunch.

How the Estadão showed, Brazil is also working to approve a declaration of support for the TFFF. The document is one of six proposals that the country is trying to support at the Summit.

Behind the scenes, achieving the success of the TFFF is essential to give the temperature on Brazil’s performance at COP-30, since the fund was the country’s bet to offer climate solutions.

There is an expectation that new contributions will be announced during the round of speeches by leaders that follows in the afternoon, especially by forestry countries, which could benefit from the initiative.
