Russia is equipping unguided bombs with jet engines,
These adapted bombs, called KAB’s, from the Soviet Union’s time, have already hit targets in Odessa, Mykolaiv and Poltava, far from the front line.
The engine, says Vadym Skibitsky, deputy leader of Ukraine’s military secret services (GUR), increases the bombs’ radius of action by 200 kilometers. Previously, they only had a range of 80 kilometers.
This is not the first time Russia has modified unguided bombs. In 2023, the Financial Times said that these bombs were being equipped with wings and precision ammunition, which allow the bomb to glide for more kilometers and transform into a guided bomb.
However, Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, warned that there is still “no widespread use of these unguided bombs at this time.”
“The enemy is testing them in combat conditions,” said Ihnat, quoted by the British publication. Even so, the Ukrainian Air Force reported the use of these bombs in the Kharkiv region.
