The data may indicate that the media dissemination and exposure for the COP were not yet consolidated

A starts next Monday (10) and for the first time it will be based in Brazil in the capital of Belém. Still, according to the survey “Attitudes towards COP-30”, carried out by the Ipsos Institute and released on the eve of the conference, almost half of Brazilians still do not know the final purpose of the event. Only 52% correctly recognize that the COP is a meeting to negotiate actions to combat climate change, while 48% do not know what it is about, according to the survey.

The survey was carried out in 30 countries between June 20 and July 4, 2025, and interviewed a total of 23,700 people over the age of 18. Another information revealed by the survey that demonstrates the lack of knowledge about the COP is that only 35% of Brazilians know that the event will take place in Belém. The country still had the best mark among all in this statistic, since only 12% of people in the world know in which city the conference will take place.

The data may indicate that publicity and media exposure for the COP were not yet consolidated, something that will only grow as the event approaches. The study assessed that other included countries that have already hosted the to combat the climate crisis showed greater knowledge than the global average (Germany 64%, France and the United Kingdom 59%, compared to the general average of 44%).

If lack of knowledge is still common, so are low expectations: 49% of people interviewed around the world consider that the event will be merely symbolic, 34% think it will be effective and 17% expect neither; In Brazil, the numbers are 43% with poor expectations, while 41% expect good results and 16% expect nothing.

The most optimistic are young people – around 45% of Generation Z say that COP-30 will be effective, compared to 29% among Boomers. Citizens from the Global South also showed greater optimism, with 51% considering that the event will be effective in the Middle East/Africa, 43% in Asia-Pacific and 39% in Latin America. Skepticism is greater in advanced economies: in Europe, 25% believe that COP30 will be effective, in North America, 24%, and in the G7, 22%.

“Hypothetically, young people and the population of countries in the Global South could see climate measures as fundamental to their future opportunities and living conditions, encouraging a more optimistic perspective”, says Márcia Cavallari, director of Ipsos. The biggest barriers seen by citizens of different countries are the lack of political will (42% of respondents considered it relevant), lack of supervision against deforestation and pollution (34%) and lack of financing for environmental projects (31%).
