The Chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, had the flag of the Czech Republic hung in the parliament building in Kyiv as a sign of gratitude to the Czech people for their support of Ukraine. On Thursday, the new chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament (PSP) of the Czech Republic and head of the SPD movement Tomio Okamura had the Ukrainian flag hung from the PSP building. TASR informs about this according to Stefančuk’s post on the X social network.

  • The Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament hoisted the Czech flag in Kyiv.
  • This act expresses gratitude to the Czech Republic for its assistance to Ukraine.
  • Parliamentary clubs of the Czech Republic reacted to the actions of the head of the PSP.

“Today, the national flag of the Czech Republic flies in the Ukrainian parliament next to our national flag. As a sign of gratitude to the Czech people for the enormous help and support of Ukraine, which has become a victim of hostile Russian aggression. For compassion. For solidarity,” Stefančuk wrote in Czech.

Support from the Czech Republic

“Just like millions of Ukrainian men and women, they will never forget the hospitable reception, shelter and protection that the Czechs provided to our people. Ukrainian flags throughout the Czech Republic,” he added.

He highlighted the visit of the chairman of the upper chamber of the Czech parliament (Senate) Miloš Vystrčil to Kyiv in April 2022, the decisiveness of outgoing PSP chairwoman Markéta Pekarová Adamová and “everyone who is still with us today, dear Czechs”.

A historical parallel

“And I also want us to never forget Moscow’s criminal role in the division of Czechoslovakia in 1938 and the Prague Spring, which it drowned in blood in 1968,” adding a quote from former Czech President Václav Havel: “Of course, Russia still doesn’t know where its borders are.”

On Thursday, Okamura had the Ukrainian flag hung from the building of the Chamber of Deputies and criticized their presence on public buildings in the Czech Republic for a long time. Shortly after that, the ODS, STAN and Piráti parliamentary clubs hung their Ukrainian flags from their windows in the parliament building. Instead of the original one, three Ukrainian flags appeared there.
