After the First Panel of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) decided to reject Jair Bolsonaro’s appeal in the case of the coup plot, the former president’s brother, Renato Bolsonaro (), said that the Court wants him to “die in jail”.
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), in turn, stated that his father has been the target of persecution and will be elected president of the Republic again. The former president is ineligible due to convictions in the Electoral Court and is in the final stretch of the trial for an attempted coup, for which he was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison.
During the inauguration of the PL’s regional headquarters in Atibaia, in the interior of São Paulo, Renato said that the decision of the First Panel in the case of the coup plot this afternoon was expected.
“You couldn’t expect anything else from the First Panel,” he said when asked about the decision at a time when there was a majority to reject the appeal — shortly after, Minister Cármen Lúcia also decided in the same direction as the other colleagues on the panel. “Like everything from the beginning. Everything is marked. They want to arrest my brother. They want to torture him. They want to humiliate him. And without a doubt they want him to die in jail, they want him to die in jail,” he declared.
When asked if he was referring to ministers, Bolsonaro’s brother replied “Justice”.
Renato also complained that the minister, rapporteur of the case, did not agree to discuss it at this time. Since 2018, the former president has undergone a seventh surgery, in addition to four other procedures to treat intestinal obstruction and .
“You don’t care about life [de Bolsonaro]. That’s it, have no doubt: in the near future they will have to pay for it”, he stated, without detailing how.
Renato also said that “the Justice may be expecting the worst possible” when asked if he believed that his brother will be sent to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex to serve his sentence in a closed regime. He was sentenced to more than 37 years in prison for the attempted coup d’état.
At the same event, the national president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, said that the party will achieve this next year with the help of other right-wing parties.
Flávio, in turn, participated via video call in the inauguration of PL’s new regional headquarters in Atibaia. He was announced at the event throughout the week and was on his way to the city, but had to return to Brasília for unexplained reasons.
“You can be sure: we will not give up on our Brazil. President Bolsonaro is going through this moment of persecution, but we will respond to everyone who today promotes this relentless, unfair and unfair persecution. Because we will go up the ramp in Brasília together for the election of our president Bolsonaro”, declared Flávio after Wassef called him.

Other defendants in the coup plot
In addition to Bolsonaro, six other defendants from the so-called crucial core of the coup plot were denied appeals by the First Panel: (former head of the Navy), Walter Braga Netto (former Minister of Defense), (former Minister of Defense), (former director of Abin and federal deputy), (former GSI minister) and (former Minister of Justice).
In a statement, the defense team regretted the rejection of the appeal and stated that it will continue to present all appropriate appeals, including to international courts.
“Important issues were no longer properly analyzed, such as the suspicion of the Honorable Rapporteur and the restriction of the defense due to the lack of sufficient time to analyze the immensity of documents dumped in the files by the Federal Police”, said lawyer José Luis Oliveira Lima.
Representing Admiral Almir Garnier Santos, lawyer Demóstenes Torres stated that he intends to present a new appeal to the Supreme Court to “review the main judgment”.
