Young Finnish woman Milja Maunuvaara (28) woke up in huge pain after she decided to insert an intrauterine device into her body. Before long, she discovered the cause of her deteriorating condition, which really surprised her. , it turned out that she had become pregnant, although she had been using birth control for many years.
- Finn Milja Maunuvaara was shocked by the cause of her stomach problems.
- Despite the implanted intrauterine device, she managed to get pregnant.
- The doctors discovered that it was an ectopic pregnancy, which she treated with medication.
- She urged women not to rely entirely on contraception and to take pregnancy tests.
Milja, from the Finnish capital Helsinki, used birth control pills for about ten years. But about 18 months ago, she decided to switch to an IUD because according to the doctors, it was a “very reliable option that would not cause hormonal fluctuations”. “I trusted it completely, just like I trusted the pills before,” the young woman said.
But one day she woke up in the middle of the night with severe stomach pains. “This has never happened to me before. I usually get period cramps, but this time it was much stronger than anything I’ve ever felt. After two days full of pain, I decided to see a doctor“, she added.
At first, the young woman assumed that it was nothing serious, but after the examination, the doctor revealed surprising news. “He asked me if I was pregnant by any chance? I told him I had an IUD, but that didn’t change his mind. After a few lab tests, he called me back in less than an hour. I was really in a different state,” clarified a shocked Milja.
The doctor advised Milja to go to the women’s clinic immediately. Specialists discovered that her hormone levels indicated an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg begins to develop outside the uterus. “I was given three options. I could wait for it to resolve itself, end it with medication or have surgery. I didn’t want to wait, but I was nervous about the procedure. That’s why I finally chose the second alternative. I received an injection in my thigh and soon it was all over“, she revealed.
A young Finnish woman is relieved that the pregnancy was ectopic because she did not want to have a child at the time. “Since then, my boyfriend and I have only used condoms. I will no longer use hormonal birth control because I don’t want to have those chemicals in my body. I wish there were more non-hormonal options available for women like me“, she said.
Milja also urged women using IUDs not to rely entirely on this form of contraception. “You should take a pregnancy test, especially if you notice symptoms or if your period is late. It’s important to remember that no method is 100 percent accurate. I recommend choosing what is best for your body, but don’t forget the possible risks“, she concluded.
