The executive secretary of the Ministry of Health, Adriano Massuda, is part of the federal government delegation that traveled to the state to assess the damage, and coordinate joint response actions with the government of and National Civil Defense.

The team sent is made up of five specialized professionals, including a specialist in mental health in disasters, a public health doctor, a nurse, a logistics resources analyst and an incident and assistance reconstruction analyst. The professionals will work to reactivate health services, support local management and provide an immediate care and psychosocial response, ensuring the safe and rapid resumption of comprehensive care for the affected population.

Among the first actions planned are the triage and stabilization of injured people, the reorganization of care and pharmaceutical flows, and the assessment of secondary health risks, such as those related to water quality, waste management and vector control. Psychological support will also be offered to affected residents.

According to the Ministry of Health, if the situation demands it, the SUS National Force is prepared to install a modular field hospital, with capacity for up to 150 daily visits, in partnership with the State Department of Health of Paraná (Sesa-PR).

Situation of the local health network

With the destruction of a large part of the health units and the partial collapse in the supply of electricity and supplies, emergency care in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu (PR) was relocated to the Hospital Regional de Laranjeiras do Sul, which acts, on a provisional basis, as a reference for the region. Basic Health Units in rural areas remain partially inoperative, and there is a shortage of medicines and vaccines due to compromised local stocks.

“We arrived in Paraná with the mission of caring, rebuilding and bringing affection to the population that needs it most at this time. Our priority is to ensure that each person affected receives health care, listening and reception. We will work alongside the state and municipal government to reestablish the functioning of the health network and return a little security and hope to the families of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu”, said the coordinator of the SUS National Force, Rodrigo Stabeli, in a statement.

According to data from the Civil Defense of Paraná and the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management (Cenad), the state registered 55 municipalities impacted by storms, with more than 31 thousand people affected. In Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, the tragedy was the most severe: 10 thousand residents — equivalent to 77% of the population — were directly affected, with five confirmed deaths, 125 injured and more than a thousand people displaced.
