The tornado occurred during the movement of a cold front, which passed through all regions of Paraná, with several storm cores. The destruction in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu is associated with a phenomenon called a supercell, which triggered at least , as reported by local authorities, until then.

“One of these storms, classified as a supercell, generated a tornado over the municipality of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, causing very severe damage to the city. Vehicles were overturned, entire trees and even masonry houses fell. The classification of the tornado was based on the analysis of the damage and also on images from Simepar’s meteorological radar”, explains Reinaldo Kneib, meteorologist at Simepar.

Initially, Simepar classified the tornado within the F2 category on the Fujita scale, which is equivalent to winds between 180 km/h and 250 km/h, but, due to the destruction, signs of winds exceeding 250 km/h were found, which increases the phenomenon’s classification to F3.

“We will continue monitoring, analyzing photo images, aerial images, together with Civil Defense, and, if necessary, we will be able to reclassify the intensity of the phenomenon, as it was extremely severe”, highlights Kneib.
