João Correia said that the party has a lot of respect for Alan Rick and his pre-candidacy for the Government, but that the party must still decide whether it will support the senator or vice-governor Mailza Assis in the 2026 elections.
“The MDB invited Alan to come to the party. Alan never said he was coming, that we have to recognize. But we thought it would expand the scope of the alliance a little. Alan then opted for the Republicans, who we also have a lot of respect for, because Roberto Duarte was very cool when he aligned himself with us, he also aligned himself in supporting Marcos Alexandre. So, this posed a question for the MDB”, said the member of the MDB state executive.
The emedebista said that the party should announce in the coming days who it should support in the dispute for Government.
“We are in the next few days, I don’t know how many, maybe 15, maybe 30, maybe 40 and 50 days, even this year, we will have to take a position either pro-Alan Rick, or pro-Mailza. We have already concluded this conversation. And I think this work will begin next week. It is a decision of the executive. As we cannot push anyone into any alliance, I have the greatest pleasure of being here, understand? Honoring the name of the party, the membership from Alan to the Republicans, and, you know, we may be together, we may not be together. We may be together in the second round or not, politics is not prophecy, politics is action”, he highlighted.
“On Monday we have the first meeting. We will look for Alan’s General Staff and Maílza’s General Staff. We will talk at length and then we will deliberate within the MDB executive”, he added.
Asked about a deadline for deliberating support, João Correia said the party had understood that December 15th would be the maximum date, but said the executive decided to shorten the period.
“Look, actually, it’s actually December 15th, but we think it’s too far away, right? Some do. I, for example, think it’s too far away. I think we have to discuss it at length, with a lot of responsibility and make an option, right? And communicate, obviously, the option. When Alan decided to join the Republicans, he had the grace to go to the MDB, communicate. That’s why I’m here, actually. It’s a return of kindness”, he concluded.
