China resumes exports of Nexperia chips and asks the EU for progress

(Bloomberg) — China confirmed on Sunday (9) that it has taken steps to exempt exports of Nexperia chips intended for civilian use that are compliant, while urging the European side to move forward in resolving the conflict that threatens to disrupt global car production.

“China has taken practical steps to exempt compliant exports for civilian use,” a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday, in response to EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic’s post on Network X indicating that China has agreed to resume sending chips to Europe. “We welcome the European side to continue exerting its influence and urge the Dutch side to correct its mistaken practices as soon as possible.”

The resumption of exports could pave the way for the Netherlands to lift government controls imposed on Nexperia, based in the Netherlands and owned by Chinese communications equipment maker Wingtech Technology Co., based in Zhejiang. China retaliated by restricting exports of components from Nexperia’s Chinese unit, which accounted for about half of pre-crisis volumes.

Pressure on the Netherlands to resolve the crisis has been mounting as carmakers such as Volkswagen AG have warned about the impact of the global chip shortage. Honda Motor Co. recently lowered its annual profit forecast after suspending production at several plants.

The latest development follows recent consultations between Dutch and Chinese officials, with Beijing agreeing to host the talks in China. In a statement on Saturday, China’s Ministry of Commerce urged the Netherlands to take concrete measures to protect the rights of Chinese companies.
